Onesteel Wire Ropeworks, foundation excavation
OneSteel’s Wire Ropeworks has expanded its Mayfield site
to accommodate a new wire rope closing machine. Milleen Constructions
were responsible for the associated building and civil works to
house the new machine that was commissioned late 2004.
The new wire rope closer is capable of manufacturing wire rope
up to 8" (203 mm) diameter in both six and eight strand constructions
and in single parcels up to 150 tonnes in weight.
The machine foundations were excavated to a maximum depth of 5
metres. To enable these excavations to be dug, LX16 sheet piles
were driven using Steelcom’s 15HF3 vibrating hammer along
each side of the two large pits. In total, approximately 170 sheet
piles were driven to a depth of up to 12 metres.
The sheet piles were inter-locked on three sides of each pit,
however due to the close proximity of the foundation to the existing
building, one side required free standing sheet piles. These piles
were braced across the foundation to the piles on the opposing
side of the pit.
